Exterior Painting in the Atlanta Climate: A Complete Guide
Pollen, humidity, UV, and storm season — how to schedule and specify exterior work in metro Atlanta.
Atlanta's climate is humid subtropical: hot, wet summers and mild winters. That combination is hard on coatings in three specific ways.
1. Humidity slows cure and feeds mildew
High dew points extend recoat windows and encourage mildew on shaded elevations. We schedule around dew point, not just temperature, and always specify mildew-resistant coatings.
2. UV degrades pigment
South and west walls take intense sun. Premium coatings with UV-stable pigments hold color years longer, which is why we don't quote builder-grade paint on exteriors.
3. Pollen contaminates fresh film
Late March through mid-April, pollen counts make it nearly impossible to keep a wet film clean. We avoid exterior finish work in that window whenever possible.
The Atlanta painting calendar
| Season | Suitability |
|---|---|
| March – mid April | Poor (pollen) |
| Late April – early June | Excellent |
| Mid June – August | Fair (heat, storms, early mornings only) |
| September – early November | Excellent |
| Late November – February | Limited (temperature dependent) |
