How Long Does Interior Paint Last?

Paint film lifespan by product grade, sheen, and room — and the maintenance habits that add years to a finish.

Interior paint applied correctly over prepared surfaces lasts five to ten years. Two factors decide where you land in that range: product quality and prep.

Lifespan by product grade

Paint gradeRealistic lifespan
Builder-grade flat2–4 years
Mid-tier acrylic latex5–7 years
Premium acrylic (Sherwin-Williams / Benjamin Moore)8–10 years

Why prep matters more than paint

A premium coating over a dusty, glossy, or unprimed surface will fail before a mid-tier coating over a properly sanded, cleaned, and primed one. Adhesion is everything. On every job we degloss existing sheen, spot-prime repairs and stains, and caulk gaps before a drop of finish coat goes on.

Habits that extend the finish

  • Dust walls twice a year with a microfiber cloth.
  • Clean marks gently with warm water and mild dish soap.
  • Fix leaks and humidity problems immediately.
  • Keep a labeled quart of each color for fast touch-ups.

When to recoat instead of repair

If more than roughly a quarter of a wall needs patching, or the sheen no longer matches after cleaning, recoat the full wall corner to corner. It costs less than you'd think and looks dramatically better than a patchwork of touch-ups.
