Exterior paint is your home's weather barrier. When it fails, moisture reaches the wood behind it and a straightforward repaint becomes a rot repair. Walk your home each spring and look for these seven signs.

1. Chalking

Rub the siding with a dark cloth. A powdery residue means the binder has broken down under UV exposure and the coating is at the end of its life.

2. Peeling, cracking, or blistering

Any lifting film means water is getting behind the paint. Address it before the substrate is compromised.

3. Faded or uneven color

If one elevation looks noticeably lighter than another, UV has degraded the pigment.

4. Recurring mildew

Dark streaks on shaded walls that return within weeks of washing mean the mildewcide has been exhausted.

5. Gaps in caulk

Open joints around windows, doors, and trim are direct water entry points.

6. Soft or spongy wood

Press a screwdriver into fascia, window sills, and trim corners. Any give means rot that needs carpentry repair before painting.

7. Hairline cracks in stucco

Small cracks are normal; anything wider than a credit card edge needs patching and an elastomeric approach.
